Family and friends will soon be able to accompany travelers to the gate to say good-bye, if a pilot program about to start at Pittsburgh International Airport is successful.

The airport will be the first in the country in the post-9/11 era to allow non-ticketed individuals to go through security and have access to airport lounges, gates, shops, and restaurants.

The program will go into effect September 5, 2017. If successful, it may be implemented at other U.S. airports.

Airport visitors will be able to proceed through security with a myPITpass obtainable on the ticketing level of the terminal. Those wishing to visit need only have a valid driver’s license or passport and will go through the same security checkpoint as passengers who will be boarding flights.

“Now you’ll be able to come out, make an outing of it, spend some time here an see this wonderful airport,” said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald in a statement.
