City officials in Orlando, Florida, said they have stopped testing facial recognition software from Amazon Web Services due to slow internet connection speeds and other technical issues, the publication Orlando Weekly reported. Orlando’s police department had hoped to use the AWS software, called Rekognition, to identify suspects from video surveillance feeds, but city officials now say they have no immediate plans to continue testing facial recognition. Orlando’s decision shows that facial recognition software isn’t yet advanced enough for widespread use. It also reflects Amazon’s aggressiveness in marketing the technology to government agencies. AWS reportedly sent employees to Orlando to install Rekognition for free, and later offered to provide surveillance cameras to the city after some of its existing ones were found to be incompatible with the software.
