MADRID, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Telefonica (TEF.MC: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Thursday it will provide broadband internet access in Spain through a new fibre optic network from Oct. 31, despite protests from rivals that they need access to the network to ensure fair competition.
Telefonica will initially offer internet speeds of 30 megabytes per second -- 10-30 times faster than any other ADSL product on the market -- although later it could use the network to offer speeds of up to 1 gigabyte per second.
