Google’s $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola last year was primarily about nabbing the 17,000 mobile patents held by the company. However, Google also acquired Motorola’s set top box unit as part of the deal, something that immediately made cable execs nervous that Google would disrupt the often too cozy and uncompetitive set top box rental business. According to a report in the New York Post, those executives won’t have to worry — as Google is looking to offload the set top box unit even before the deal is closed. That’s a significant 180 from last summer when Google CEO Larry Page argued that the set top box unit could play a starring role in Google’s attempt to revolutionize the living room
